To Hull and back as Angle Ring bends its way to the top of the Princes Quay Footbridge
The Highways England pedestrian footbridge spanning the A63 between Princes Dock and Hull Marina is now fully open after the two year project was completed in early 2021.
Angle Ring is proud to have worked on the eye catching curved canopy that spans the length of the bridge, as well as key structural components in the 60m long structure.
Weighing in at 150 tonnes and able to take the weight of a Boeing 747 aircraft, Angle Ring provided a core range of bending services to the main contractor, including induction bent hollow section, cold rolled tube, tapered cones, and pressed deck plates.
Mark Phillips, Technical Director at Angle Ring comments: “This is yet another unique project we have worked on, and the range of services we provided highlights the importance of curved steel in the construction process.
“Work passed through nearly every department at Angle Ring, so we really have been able to utilise all our experience to provide a range of solutions to the design, structural and installation contractors involved in the project.
“Due to the sheer size and location of the structure, it had to be put together in such a unique way to limit downtime on the public road, with the 150 tonnes structure having to be rotated 90 degrees before being lowered on the concrete support piling. Seeing the bridge in place in all it’s glory is a fantastic sight to behold.”
The bridge, subsequently named ‘Murdoch’s Connection’ after Dr Mary Murdoch, a pioneering female Doctor who made her name in the city by supporting key public campaigns, has been nominated for numerous design awards.
